Students: Recording/Uploading Video and Embedding in Canvas

Updated on

This guide will show how, as a student, you can upload and embed video using Panopto/Media Library within the Canvas environment. For this guide, we will be using a discussion post in Canvas as an example, but you can utilize this workflow wherever you have access to create within Canvas. Please note that recording with Panopto Capture requires using Chrome, Firefox or Edge browsers.

Select the Panopto icon within the Canvas editor

Select "My Folder" from the folder drop-down menu

This will record or upload your media to your personal folder.

If uploading existing video select "Upload"

If recording content, select "Record", name your capture and select "Launch Capture"

The browser-based Panopto Capture tool will now launch within a new browser tab.

In Panopto Capture, select your audio/video devices and select the red record button.

Panopto Capture will provide a 5 second countdown and then begin recording. Panopto has additional guides on creating video using Panopto Capture located here.

When finished, you can preview your recording, record again or wait for the notification to close your Panopto Capture tab.

In Canvas, select "Insert"

If you uploaded an existing video file, or recorded via Panopto Capture, you can now choose to insert your video.

Submit your response via Canvas

Your video will now appear within the Canvas editor window and you can submit your entry. Your video content will be hosted within your "My Folder" but the embedded version will be viewable to those that can access the page it is embedded within.
