Pressbooks chapters can have formative, interactive elements that students complete when accessing the materials through the integration with Canvas @ Yale. Once students have engaged in these activities, Instructors can push the grades students receive on those activities back to Canvas.
The Pressbooks integration with Canvas @ Yale does not let you search for and select content that you did not clone or already create.
To bring materials into Canvas, you must first create the content in Pressbooks or create a "Clone" of the materials you want to use in Pressbooks so a copy of the content is associated with your Yale Pressbooks account.
At this time, Yale community members must request a book be cloned or created. Please reference the Get Started page on the Yale Pressbooks website for information on requesting a book.

This article will address the following information:
Adding Pressbooks Material with Embedded Activities
- Navigate to your Canvas course site and click to go to the Modules section in the Course Navigation.
- If you do not already have a module where you want to add Pressbooks material, click the "+Module" button in the top-right corner and create a new module.
- In the module where you want to add the Pressbooks materials, click the "+" icon.
- In the pop-up window to add an item to the module, click the drop-down menu and select "External Tool."
- From the list of external tools available, find and select "Pressbook Content Selector."
- A new pop-up window will open with all of the Pressbooks materials you have created or cloned to your Pressbooks account.
-
Check off the chapters / sections of the Pressbooks materials with activities you want to add to the module.
- Check off the "Pressbooks Results Viewer" option at the top of the pop-up box.
- Only add the Pressbooks Results Viewer once per course—it is not necessary to add this each time you add items from Pressbooks that have interactive elements.
- The Pressbooks Results Viewer provides students with a gradebook-like view to the scores they earned for each interactive element in linked Canvas activities.
- The viewer also provides instructors with a gradebook-live view of the scores all students earned for each interactive element in linked Canvas activities.
- Chapters / sections that have interactive components embedded in them will say "graded assignment" after the title rather than "linked resource."
- Check off the "Pressbooks Results Viewer" option at the top of the pop-up box.
- When done, scroll to the bottom of this pop-up box and click the "Select Content" button.
Depending on how many different chapters there are in all of the materials you created / cloned on Pressbooks, this pop-up box can be very long. You must scroll to the bottom though to click this button for the materials to be selected and brought over.
- The Pressbooks materials that have a grade associated with them will be created as Canvas assignments, and the "Pressbooks Results Viewer" will appear as a link for students and instructors to click.
- Remember to publish the module and Pressbooks content in Canvas if it is not already available.
The default grade assigned to the Canvas assignment that gets made is 10 points. Pressbooks will report back a percentage score to Canvas when synced, which will then convert to the appropriate points available in the Canvas assignment. Edit the Canvas Assignment points if you do not want it to be worth 10 points.
Syncing Pressbooks Activity Grades back to Canvas
- Once the "Pressbooks Results Viewer" has been added to the Canvas course site, navigate to the Pressbooks resource you cloned or created on the Yale Pressbooks Network and click the "Edit" button for the chapter that has the H5P activities you want synced with Canvas.
- Scroll down to the "LMS Grade reporting" block to see the various H5P activities added to this chapter. Click the checkbox next to each H5P element that you want synced to Canvas.
- Click the "Grading Scheme" drop-down menu to select if you would like Pressbooks to pass back the:
- First Attempt
- Average
- Best Attempt
- When done, click the "Save" button in the "Status & Visibility" block on the right-hand side. The grades will now pass automatically to Canvas as students complete those specific H5P activities.
There is not a way to differentiate different grading schemes for H5P activities in the same chapter. Any selected H5P element for grading in a chapter will use the same Grading Scheme.
Grading schemes can change or be different between chapters.
