Panorama: Downloading Alternative Formats

Panorama, in addition to providing Accessibility Scores to course materials for instructors to improve their course accessibility, also provides instructors and students with the option to download course materials in alternative formats. Alternative formats provide users with the ability to access the content in otherwise unavailable accessible formats such as Braille.

There are numerous options for users to download the available alternative formats of a file upload in a Canvas course. Below are the details for each option, as seen from a student's perspective.

Students cannot see the accessibility score for a resource in Canvas—they can only download an alternative format.

Option 1: Files Section

  1. Click the "Files" section of the course navigation.
  2. Click the blue person in a circle icon to open the "Alternative Format" menu for that item.
  1. In the pop-up box that opens, select the alternative format option from the list.
    1. Select to "View" the file in the alternative format or "Download" the alternative format file.
    2. If the alternative format has not been generated yet, click the "Generate" option for that format to become available for use.
  1. On a Canvas Page, click the blue person in a circle icon to open the "Alternative Format" menu for that item.
  1. In the pop-up box that opens, select the alternative format option from the list.
    1. Select to "View" the file in the alternative format or "Download" the alternative format file.
    2. If the alternative format has not been generated yet, click the "Generate" option for that format to become available for use.

Option 3: File Preview Display

  1. When a file has been opened in the Canvas preview viewer click the blue person in a circle icon to open the "Alternative Format" menu for that item.
  1. In the pop-up box that opens, select the alternative format option from the list.
    1. Select to "View" the file in the alternative format or "Download" the alternative format file.
    2. If the alternative format has not been generated yet, click the "Generate" option for that format to become available for use.

Option 4: Canvas Content Item

  1. On a Canvas page or item (such as the Syllabus, Assignment, Discussion, etc.) click the blue person in a circle icon in the top-page breadcrumbs, to the right of the Canvas item's name.
  1. In the pop-up box that opens, select the alternative format option from the list.
    1. Select to "View" the file in the alternative format or "Download" the alternative format file.
    2. If the alternative format has not been generated yet, click the "Generate" option for that format to become available for use.
