The Media Library (Panopto) has the ability to manually upload captions or add captions through automatic speech recognition (ASR). This guide will show how to import and edit ASR captions as well as upload captions created elsewhere.
Captions created through ASR are not 100% accurate. Captions added to media this way should be reviewed and edited before being used for your content.

This article will address the following information:
Importing Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) Generated Captions
- In the Media Library folder with content that you you want to add captions to, click the "Edit" button that appears when you hover over the media item.
- In the video editor, select "Captions" from the left-hand menu.
- From the "Import captions" drop down menu select the "Import automatic captions" option.
Newly created media may not have the option to "Import automatic captions" available immediately as the media is still being processed. This process can take a few minutes, depending on the length of the media. Check back in the video editor after the media has had more time to process.
If you do not see the option to import automatic captions after a prolonged period (20+ minutes), please contact [email protected] and provide a link to your video for reprocessing.
- The captions will populate with the text and timestamps listed.
It is highly recommended to edit your ASR generated captions, as they can contain numerous errors.
- When done adding your captions, click the "Apply" button in the media editor along the top.
Editing Your Captions
- In the Media Library folder with content that you you want to add captions to, click the "Edit" button that appears when you hover over the media item.
- In the video editor, select "Captions" from the left-hand menu.
- Click the Three Dot icon next to the timestamp and select the "Edit" Pencil icon to open a specific caption block to edit.
- In the pop-up window that opens edit the "Caption" in the text box. You can also adjust the timestamp of when this caption plays by changing the "Time."
- When done, click the "Save" button.
The "Time" field is represented as hours:minutes:seconds:milliseconds (h:mm:ss:ms).
Example: If you wanted to adjust a caption's timestamp from displaying 53 seconds into the media to 57 seconds into the media, the timestamp would look like this:
0:00:53:00 → 0:00:57:00
- When done editing your captions, click the "Apply" button in the media editor along the top.
