Canvas @ Yale supports a wide variety of external applications that are integrated into Canvas to support, improve, and enhance the teaching and learning experiences of our faculty and students. The following article contains an overview of Yale's external applications available for instructional use, as well as other general information to be mindful of when adopting external educational technology tools into your course design and facilitation.
Guidelines for Using Non-Yale Supported Technology
Yale University is required to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA protects the privacy of student educational records, and educational records are, broadly speaking, any information directly related to the student and maintained by Yale, or a party on our behalf, such as a centrally supported application like Canvas.
When using technology not provided by Yale, instructors can better ensure compliance with university standards and regulatory requirements including protecting students’ privacy if they adhere to the following Guidelines.
For a complete list of Instructional Tools integrated and available in Canvas @ Yale, please see the Poorvu Center's Instructional Tools page.
If faculty or students are interested in using a platform that can integrate with Canvas that is not currently available in Canvas @ Yale, contact the Educational Technology in the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning.
We can work to move it through the Yale ITS, Office of General Counsel, and Risk Management processes to see about its viability for integration with Canvas @ Yale.
