Utilizing Anonymous Grading

Updated on

By default, student names are shown in the Gradebook, however, Canvas allows you to hide student names in Assignments when grading in the SpeedGrader to remove any potential bias in grading.

You can also turn on anonymous grading at the course level that will allow you to create assignments with anonymous grading.

Enabling Anonymous Grading in SpeedGrader

This setting will turn on anonymous grading for all assignments even after leaving the SpeedGrader for a specific assignment.

  1. Open the SpeedGrader from the assignment you would like to grade anonymously.
  1. In the top banner of the SpeedGrader, click the gear icon near the top-left of the page and choose "Options."
  1. From the pop up box, check the box "Hide student names in the SpeedGrader" and click "Save Settings."
    1. Uncheck this setting to disable anonymous grading for this (and all other) assignment SpeedGrader.
  1. You can check to see that the student names are hidden by clicking the student name drop down menu. You will see the names of students are now listed as "Student 1," "Student 2," etc.

Enabling Anonymous Grading at the Course Level

You can enable anonymous grading at the course level. Turning this feature on displays an additional option when creating assignments, which allows you to determine if you want the grading to be anonymous at the time of the assignment creation.

  1. Click on "Settings" from your course navigation.
  2. Select the "Feature Options" tab.
  3. Toggle on the "Anonymous Grading" option.
    1. Toggling the switch automatically saves and applies your selection.
  1. With this feature enabled, when creating a new assignment an "Anonymous Grading" option is available to check off to make it so that "Graders cannot view student names" when in the SpeedGrader or in the Gradebook.
  1. When viewing the assignment in the GradeBook, the column will be blanked out and the word "ANONYMOUS" will be displayed below the Assignment header.
  1. If the grader tries to open an individual student's assignment in SpeedGrader from the Gradebook, a warning pop-up box appears telling the grader that they cannot access a specific student.
    1. Opening SpeedGrader from this warning will take the grader to the SpeedGrader with an anonymous view.
    2. This feature cannot be turned off in the options, and is only on for the specific assignment.
  1. Once an assignment has been graded, and you are ready to view and post individual student grades for the assignment, you can click on the three dot icon next to the name of the assignment in the Gradebook and click "Post Grades."
  1. A pop-up box message will alert you that anonymity will be removed for that assignment.
    1. Click "Post" to post grades and remove anonymity.
