The IgniteAI Search tool allows instructors and students to search content of a Canvas course site to more easily find course materials.
IgniteAI Search only indexes and returns content found in:
- Content Pages
- Announcements
- Discussion Prompts
- Assignment Descriptions
IgniteAI Search does NOT currently search or index course Files (neither the names of files nor their content).
The first time you open the IgniteAI Search tool, it will take a few moments to fully index the course. This process must complete before you will be able to successfully search the course.

Searching for Course Content
- In your Canvas course site, click the "IgniteAI Search" button in the Course Navigation.
- Type your search term(s) into the "Search this course" text box.
- Click the "Search" button.
- The search Results will appear below the search box. Click on one of the results to have it open in a new tab.
After the search results, you can also find a "You may also be interested in" section at the bottom of the page with additional results which may be semantically related to your search query.
Filtering Course Content
- Filter search results on the IgniteAI Search page by clicking the "Filters" button in the top-right corner.
- From the side-drawer menu that opens, check off the Sources that you want to include in your search results.
- When ready, click the "Apply" button to see your filtered results.
