Changing Your Canvas Profile Picture (Student Guide)

By default, all Canvas participants have blank placeholder profile pictures associated with their accounts. Students can add or change their profile pictures on the User Profile page. Canvas profile pictures are visible to all other participants in current-term courses. Note that Canvas profile pictures are different from official University ID photos, which are uploaded prior to the first term of enrollment and cannot be changed afterward.

Setting Your Profile Picture

  1. Click the “Account” button in the left side global navigation menu and select the “Profile” button in the drawer. 
  1. On the next screen, hover over the placeholder profile picture and click the pencil icon that appears at the bottom right corner.
  1. Select from the options below how you would like to upload your profile picture.
Uploading a Profile Picture from Your Computer
  1. In the pop-up, click on the “Picture Options” dropdown menu and select “Upload a Picture.”
  2. Click on the blue “choose a picture” button, then select a photo to upload from your computer.
    1. Alternatively, drag and drop a photo from your computer into the window.
  1. Once a picture has been selected / uploaded, follow the instructions on the screen to crop and resize your photo.
  2. Click the blue “Save” button when finished.
Taking a Profile Picture with Your Computer Camera
  1. In the pop-up, click on the “Picture Options” dropdown menu and select “Take a Picture.”
  2. If not already allowed, configure your internet browser settings to allow Canvas access to your computer camera.
  1. Position yourself in the camera frame and click the “Take Picture” button.
    1. To retake the photo, click the “Retry” button.
  1. Click the blue "Save" button when finished.
Importing a Profile Picture from Gravatar
  1. In the pop-up, click on the “Picture Options” dropdown menu and select “From Gravatar.”
  2. Enter the email address associated with your Gravatar account in the text field.
  3. Click the “Preview” button to view how your Gravatar would look as a profile picture.
  1. Click the blue “Save” button when finished.
