Accommodations: Providing Extra Time and/or Attempts for a Quiz

Updated on

Instructors may receive requests from Student Accessibility Services to provide certain accommodations for students. Often times, educational technology can help meet the needs of these accommodations.

Extended time or extra attempts can be set on quizzes built within Canvas. This is done after the quiz is published, but before it is administered. The process for giving extra time and/or attempts on a quiz is different for Classic and New Quizzes.

If you are providing extra time on a quiz as part of a student's accommodations, be sure to also update that student's specific Available / Due Date settings as well to ensure that the student does not get locked out of their quiz attempt prior to their full allotted time.

For example, if quiz activity is available from 9am to 10am and has a 60 minute time limit assigned, then a student with an accommodation for time and a half would still be cut off at 60 minutes unless they are individually assigned the quiz to be available from 9am to 10:30am. Check out our Accommodations: Setting Different Due Dates for Individual Students on the Same Activity resource for instructions on setting different due dates for students.
