What role am I in this Canvas Course?

During the early registration and the add / drop period, students can register for courses and be added to their Canvas course sites. Students can officially register for a course by adding it to their Registration Worksheet, where they will be enrolled in the Canvas course with the role of "Student." Students can also add a course to their Canvas Worksheet, where they will be enrolled in the Canvas course with the role of "Visitor."

This article will review how to check what your role is in a Canvas course.

Visitors to a course are not officially enrolled / registered for that course, and will be purged from the courses on their Canvas Worksheet at the end of the latest school's add / drop period. For more information, view our End of Add / Drop Period article.

Terms

Student (Role) - A student who is officially registered and enrolled in a Canvas course because they have added the course to their Registration Worksheet during early registration and/or the add / drop period.

Visitor (Role) - A student who added a Canvas course to their Canvas Worksheet to experience the course prior to officially enrolling in it on the Registration Worksheet during early registration and/or the add / drop period.

Checking Canvas Role

  1. Navigate into your Canvas course and click the "People" tool in the course navigation along the left-hand side of the page.

If the "People" tool is not enabled in your course you can either:

  1. Reach out to your instructor and/or department registrar's office and ask them to confirm what Role you have in the course.

OR

  1. Check your Registration and/or Canvas Worksheets in Yale Course Search during the early registration and add / drop periods.
  1. Once in the People tool find the row with your "Name" in it and check the "Role" column.
  1. Reference our "Student Information" section of the End of Add / Drop Period article for more information about what you can do if you are a Visitor in a course and want / need to retain access to the course after the add / drop period.
