Gemini LTI: Creating and Connecting a Gem / Notebook

Gemini LTI lets Instructors create new Gemini Notebooks and Gems, or connect pre-existing Notebooks and Gems to your Canvas course through the Gemini LTI.

Gemini LTI is Configured for Yale Google Accounts

Users must use a Yale Eli Apps Google account. Personal / non-Yale Google accounts are not accepted and will fail to load the Gemini LTI tool in Canvas @ Yale. If you do not have a Yale Eli Apps account, please contact the ITS Help Desk or your school’s IT support service.

Request Access to Gemini LTI for Fall 2026 / Spring 2027

Please indicate your interest in using Gemini LTI for the Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 term. Please complete the AI & Ed Tech Pilot form once for each tool you are interested in requesting, and you can indicate up to 2 courses per submission. While completing this form is not a guarantee, we will make ever effort to provide licenses for next year.

Creating and Connecting a New Gemini Notebook

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course site and, in the course navigation menu, click the Google Gemini tool.
  2. In the Manage notebooks section, click the Create New option.
    1. A new window will open to guide you through the Notebook setup process.
  1. Enter a Title for the notebook, which is the name of the Notebook that will be visible to students once the notebook shared with the class.
  2. Select the course materials from your Canvas course that you want to include in the notebook.
    1. Available course materials include: Announcements, Assignments, Files, Pages, and Quizzes
  3. After selecting your course materials, select the Create Notebook option in the lower-right corner of the setup window.

Note: If you have not yet connected your Canvas account to your Yale Google Workspace account, you will be prompted to do so before you can continue.

The institution URL it is asking you provide is https://yale.instructure.com

  1. Gemini will create the new Notebook using the selected course materials and add it immediately to the course to start using it.
    1. You can open the Notebook and continue adding additional Sources if you want to add materials not shared / available in your Canvas course site.
    2. Additionally, once the Notebook is created, you can select any output types for students to access.

Creating and Connecting a New Gemini Gem

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course site and, in the course navigation menu, click the Google Gemini tool.
  2. In the Manage Gems section, select the Create New option.
    1. A new window will open to guide you through the Gem setup process.
  1. Enter a Title for the Gem, which is the name of the Gem that will be visible to students once it is shared with the class.
  2. Provide a Description to help students understand what the Gem's purpose is.
  3. Write a set of Instructions to dictate how the Gem should respond to prompts.
  4. Once done, select the Create Gem option. Gemini will create the new Gem and add it immediately to the course to start using it.

Note: The Gemini LTI does not allow you to attach / add Knowledge to a Gem you are creating in Canvas directly, neither uploaded content in the course site nor on your computer / in Google Drive.

Once the Gem is created, you can open the Gem and continue to edit it further to add files to its Knowledge section, though your Canvas course site will not be an available source to select at this time.

Connecting an Existing Gemini Notebook

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course site and, in the course navigation menu, click the Google Gemini tool.
  2. In the Manage notebooks section, click the Add to course option.
  1. In the new window that opens, check off the existing Notebooks you already have made that you want to share with the course.
  2. Once items are chosen, select the Add to course option at the top.
  1. The Notebook is now added to the course and students can begin accessing it immediately.

Connecting an Existing Gemini Gem

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course site and, in the course navigation menu, click the Google Gemini tool.
  2. In the Manage Gems section, select the Add to course option.
  1. In the new window that opens, check off the existing Gems you already have made that you want to share with the course.
  2. Once items are chosen, select the Add to course option at the top.
  1. The Gem is now added to the course and students can begin accessing it immediately.
