PlayPosit

PlayPosit is an interactive web-based video platform that allows instructors to enrich video content with interactions including a variety of quiz question types, discussions, and other tools to increase learner engagement through participation.  With advance question types and branching features, PlayPosit can add an engaging adaptive assessments to your course.

Why use PlayPosit?

The PlayPosit tool set is an overlay that can be used with Media Library video content, YouTube videos, or Vimeo videos (or a combination of these) to create learner "bulbs" that students can watch and complete.  PlayPosit is integrated with Canvas so that bulbs can be linked to Canvas Assignments for graded activities. PlayPosit provides a series of interaction types that can be injected into the video a specific points in time to help enhance the content or to check student learning and comprehension.

Use Cases for PlayPosit

PlayPosit can be used in many ways.  Below are just a few examples of common ways to incorporate PlayPosit into your course.

Use PlayPosit:

  • to increase student engagement with asynchronous lecture recordings by injecting quiz questions and supplemental content that reinforce the presented topic.
  • as a feedback tool to collect student understanding and comfort with prerecorded lecture content.
  • with foreign language videos to create "translate the dialogue" style activities for practice and/or for a grade.
  • asynchronous discussion boards overlayed on a video to encourage student collaboration.
  • as an audience response system using the broadcast feature in person via Canvas. or broadcast feature remotely via Zoom.
  • as an assignment type where students create the PlayPosit content/bulb in a student-as-the-lecturer style activity.
How do I use PlayPosit in my course?

PlayPosit is a tool that is available in all academic courses.  The tool can be used in coordination with a Canvas Assignment for grading purposes or can be used as a standalone activity/lecture by adding it to a page via the Rich Content Editor or as a Module Item.

Adding a PlayPosit Activity to Your Course
Add PlayPosit as a graded Assignment

Go to the Assignment tool [1] and click the + Assignment button [2].

Follow the general instructions to create a Canvas Assignment.  When you get to the submission type, select External Tool [3] and then click Find [4].

In the pop-up, scroll down and click on the PlayPosit link [5].  (NOTE:  There are 2 scroll bars [6] on the pop-up - you may need to scroll down in both scroll bars to find the PlayPosit link.)

The pop-up with change to be the PlayPosit menu - click on Enter PlayPosit [7] and then follow the instructions on how to build PlayPosit bulbs and then complete the process to Assign a bulb to students.

Add PlayPosit as an ungraded activity via the Rich Content Editor

Activities added via the Rich Content Editor will not sync grades back to Canvas - even if you insert the activity into the instructions space of a Canvas Assignment.

New Rich Content Editor

The New Rich Content Editor will be enforced January 8, 2021 but is currently available for instructors in their Personal Sandbox sites and is also available for instructors to enable in academic courses as desired before January 8th.

To add a PlayPosit interaction via the New Rich Content Editor, go to the Edit View of your Canvas Page, Assignment, etc...  Once you can see the Rich Content Editor and the tool bar, click on the Apps Icon[1] then View All [2] (or click Tools [3] then Apps [4] then View All [5].)

You will now see a pop-up with all the available external applications.  Click on PlayPosit [6].

The pop-up will now change to the PlayPosit menu.  Click on Enter PlayPosit [7] and follow the instructions on how to build PlayPosit bulbs and then complete the process following the instructions on how to assign and ungraded bulb.

Old Rich Content Editor

To add a PlayPosit interaction via the Old Rich Content Editor, go to the Edit View of your Canvas Page, Assignment, etc...  Once you can see the Rich Content Editor and the tool bar, click on the PlayPosit Icon[1] in the toolbar.

PlayPosit pop-up will appear.  Click on Enter PlayPosit [2] and follow the instructions on how to build PlayPosit bulbs and then complete the process following the instructions on how to assign and ungraded bulb.

Add PlayPosit as an ungraded Module Item

Activities added via the Rich Content Editor will not sync grades back to Canvas - even if you insert the activity into the instructions space of a Canvas Assignment.

To add a PlayPosit interaction as a Module item, go to the Modules area [1] of your course site.  If you do not already have one, click the + Module button [2] and follow the instructions on how to create a new Module.   Once you have a module, click the add module item + button [3] for the module in which you want the PlayPosit interaction to appear.

In the Add Item pop-up, select External Tool from the Add drop down menu [4] and the scroll to find and click on PlayPosit [5].  (NOTE:  There are 2 scroll bars [6] on the pop-up - you may need to scroll down in both scroll bars to find the PlayPosit link.)

The pop-up will now change to the PlayPosit menu.  Click on Enter PlayPosit [7] and follow the instructions on how to build PlayPosit bulbs and then complete the process following the instructions on how to assign and ungraded bulb.

How do I monitor/grade student submissions?

If the PlayPosit activity is a graded and tied to a Canvas Assignment, the students' grades will automatically pass from PlayPosit to the Canvas Grades area immediately upon submission.  

To view student submissions, the instructor can go to the Assignment/Page/Module Item where the PlayPosit bulb is located and click on it.  When the activity loads, click on Monitor [1].

You will then be taken to PlayPosit where you will see a list of students who have completed the bulb.  You can see some general submission information [2] right in the spreadsheet view.  To view a specific student's submission, just click on their Learner Name [3].  

If you make updates to grades in PlayPosit, you can use the Sync Grades button [4] to push your updated grades into the Canvas Grades area.

What will my students see?

When students complete PlayPosit activities, they will need to go to the appropriate Canvas tool where you posted it.   Once they are on the page/assignment/module where the PlayPosit interaction is located, the PlayPosit viewer [1] will display.  The student will need to click on the video player to being the activity.

When player is activated, the video will start.  When there is an interaction, a pop-out [2] will appear on top of the video [3].  The student will need to complete the interaction to continue playing the video

NOTE:  By default, students cannot fast-forward through the video and/or skip interactions.  Instructors can change settings to modify that behavior.  See the Playback section of the Building a Bulb help article.

Depending on your implementation and settings, your students may see something a bit different than what appears below.

When the student completes the bulb, they will see a summary of their submission [4] (based on the settings you set when creating your bulb).  Below is an example of a summary of a bulb that had both graded and ungraded question types:
