The Photo Roster is a user management tools within each course site. It is a roster tool specific to Canvas @ Yale created by Yale. Only users with an Instructor or TA role will be able to see this tool. This tool provides a more detailed view of the students in your course, including information such as their photo, major, year, college, and email address. There are two different views: "Photo Roster" and "List View".
Why Use the Photo Roster
- View additional information to learn more about your students
- Includes photos of your students
- Download an offline list of your students to communicate with students outside of Canvas. This may be particularly useful in case of any service interruptions.
How is it Different from the Canvas People Tool?
The people tool is created by Canvas. Students are able to see this tool and can see other people on this list. From here, you can manually enroll users, as well as create new group sets. The photo roster tool is created by Yale. Only instructors and TAs will be able to see this tool. This tool has more information on each student than the people tool, and will allow you to download an offline list of the users in your course.
The photo roster view is the default view and shows the a user's name, NameCoach (if one exists), course role, graduation year, and major. It will also show student ID photos if the user is a Yale student.
The list view shows the users in a list format. It shows the user information available on the photo roster view and additionally includes the user's ID, email address, and residential college. The list can be exported into an Excel (CSV) file. We highly recommend exporting this list so that you have access to it in an offline view. This is especially useful in the event that you lose internet connection or cannot access Canvas.
