Gemini LTI provides the opportunity for Instructors to make AI-powered resources and tools available quickly and easily to a class. As such, we have some recommendations for Instructors to consider when adopting Gemini LTI in your Canvas course site.
Gemini LTI is Configured for Yale Google Accounts
Users must use a Yale Eli Apps Google account. Personal / non-Yale Google accounts are not accepted and will fail to load the Gemini LTI tool in Canvas @ Yale. If you do not have a Yale Eli Apps account, please contact the ITS Help Desk or your school’s IT support service.
Request Access to Gemini LTI for Fall 2026 / Spring 2027
Please indicate your interest in using Gemini LTI for the Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 term. Please complete the AI & Ed Tech Pilot form once for each tool you are interested in requesting, and you can indicate up to 2 courses per submission. While completing this form is not a guarantee, we will make ever effort to provide licenses for next year.

Technical Considerations
- Remember that users with the role of Guest Instructors and TAs become editors on Gems / Notebooks.
- Avoid adding sensitive course or student information to the Knowledge sections of Gems / Notebooks.
- Review and understand how Google permissions will work related to sharing Gemini items and related Knowledge base content.
- Consider using Google Chrome as your browser if you encounter issues.
- Confirm that students have access to Yale Eli Apps accounts before committing to using Gems / Notebooks as not all Yale users get a Google account automatically.
- Only Yale-domain owned Google accounts (@yale.edu emails) can launch and use the Gemini LTI tool.

Pedagogical Considerstions
- Use Gemini LTI for intentional, course-specific activities rather than enabling it without a clear purpose.
- Provide students with clear instructions about what to do in Gemini and what to submit in Canvas.
- Test the student experience before assigning a Gemini-focused activity if possible.
Suggested Assignment Workflow
At this time, Gemini Gems and Notebooks do not support an integration that allows for an instructor to directly grade student work in the tool, nor does it support the ability to see into the chats that learners engage in with Gems / Notebooks shared with them.
If an instructor would like to use a Gem / Notebook in a graded assignment in Canvas, we recommend the following workflow:
- Create or select the Gem / Notebook in the Gemini LTI
- Create or navigate to a Canvas Assignment and go into the settings page to edit the assignment's Description / Instructions through the Rich Content Editor (RCE).
- In the RCE, select the Apps button in the editor ribbon, which looks like a plug icon. Select Google Gemini from the list of applications to add to the Description / Instructions with a link.
- Clearly describe in your Canvas instructions for the assignment what students should use the Gem / Notebook for and what they are responsible for submitting in Canvas.
- When done Save / Save & Publish the assignment.
