Gemini LTI: Best-Practices for Reusing Gems and Notebooks Across Semesters / Courses

Updated on

Gemini Gems and Notebooks are items that live in your Yale Eli Apps Google account. The Gemini LTI just provides a convienent and direct way to share these tools with courses without needing to manually add users. As a result, users will retain access to Gems and Notebooks unless some action is taken by the instructor. This article aims to provide some recommendations on how to approach configuring and managing Gems / Notebooks for use across semesters and courses.

Gemini LTI is Configured for Yale Google Accounts

Users must use a Yale Eli Apps Google account. Personal / non-Yale Google accounts are not accepted and will fail to load the Gemini LTI tool in Canvas @ Yale. If you do not have a Yale Eli Apps account, please contact the ITS Help Desk or your school’s IT support service.

Naming Conventions for Gems / Notebooks

Instructors may see multiple Gems and Notebooks when selecting to add an existing item through the Gemini LTI. To assist instructors with selecting the correct Gem or Notebook when their option of Gems / Notebooks perhaps becomes too large to reasonably keep track of, we recommend that item names should include enough specific detail to distinguish one course or semester from another.

Recommended Naming Pattern:

  • Course number (Term) - Purpose

Examples:

  • HIST 210 (FA26) - Primary Source Analysis Gem
  • CHEM 101 (FA26) - Lab Notebook Helper
  • ENGL 120 (SP27) - Draft Revision Coach

We recommend avoiding generic names like:

  • Demo Gem
  • Class Notebook
  • Student Helper
  • Research Bot

Additionally, these Gems and Notebooks will appear in the "Shared with me" spaces of Gemini for students, so having clearly named items will also assist students in locating Gems / Notesbooks quickly if they are navigating through their Eli Apps account to these resources as opposed to directly from your Canvas course site and the Gemini LTI tool.

Reusing Gemini Items Across Semesters / Courses

We recommend that Instructors avoid reusing the exact same Gem / Notebook across multiple semesters unless they intentionally want prior users to remain associated with it.

Recommended practice:

  • Make a fresh copy of a Gem / Notebook for each course and semester.
  • Use a clear naming convention, such as:
    • ENGL 114 (FA26) - Research Coach
    • SPAN 130 (SP27) - Conversation Practice Gem
  • Remove Gems / Notebooks from old Canvas courses when they are no longer needed / users no longer need access to them.
  • Check the sharing permission list on the Gem / Notebook before reusing it.
